Beet it! Panda Chief TanSnowMan harvests a handful of beets from his organic home garden, where there once stood a water hungry lawn. Although this 10’x5’ garden only produces 1-2% of his family’s monthly intake of calories, what is important to him is the principle of using such a valuable resource as water and land for producing efficient calories, rather than sustaining a stagnant, sterile lawn. Another positive side effect of the garden: The back yard has exploded with biodiversity and life!

With discussions about climate change, there seems to be relatively little dialogue about the impact of our food production systems on the worldwide ecosystem. Some sources report that food production (from seed to table) is to blame for upwards of 33% of the overall impact on climate change and ecological degradation in the U.S. And when one considers that a pound of beef requires roughly 25 times the energy to produce than the equivalent calories of corn, it is easy to understand where a lot of the energy is being consumed. Now, we are not saying that everyone should become a vegan (although the average vegan diet requires 90% less energy and resources than the standard American diet), nor are we promoting a meat free lifestyle. We simply hope to impart some awareness around the impact of our food, which we hope can be integrated into more efficient dietary choices. #TRIBEUP Efficiency!
